(WEA-Maritimes-Heat)

Heat warnings have been issued across the Maritimes as a massive heat dome has settled over much of Ontario and Quebec.

The humid weather is expected to continue until tomorrow across New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and P-E-I, where temperatures will rise above 28 Celsius and the humidity will make it feel like it’s 36 to 42 Celsius.

The highest humidex values are expected across New Brunswick, where it will feel like 40 or higher today and tomorrow across the province — except along the coast of the Bay of Fundy.

In Nova Scotia, humidex values will reach between 36 and 39 today and slightly lower tomorrow — and in P-E-I, the humidex will hover around 36.

(Labrador-Fire-Ban)

A fire ban has been declared across Labrador.

The provincial Forestry Department imposed the ban because of extensive wildfires and elevated Fire Weather Index ratings.

All permits to burn grass, brush or other materials have been cancelled, and fireworks and sky lanterns are banned.

As well, wood-fuelled fires are not permitted on forest land, within 300 metres of forest land, or on land that contains flammable vegetation.

(NL-Flood-Surgeries)

Outpatient surgeries at Newfoundland and Labrador’s children’s hospital are being delayed.

The province’s health services organization says that’s due to flooding caused by a water line break at Janeway Hospital in St. John’s.

Health Services says blood collection appointments are also being rescheduled.

The agency says in-patient and emergency services aren’t impacted as cleanup of the flood continues.

(Halifax-Land-Pilot)

A Halifax pilot project offering surplus city land for affordable housing has so far resulted in one project.

Last Tuesday, Halifax regional council unanimously approved the sale of 48 Pinecrest Drive in north Dartmouth to the housing non-profit Rooted.

The municipality will sell the property for one dollar.

The lot has an estimated market value of about 300-thousand dollars and sits between two properties the non-profit already owns.

(PEI-Essentials-Benefit)

Some residents of P-E-I will get extra money on Friday to help with the cost of living.

The province is launching its new Island Essentials Benefit, which is available to Islanders aged 19 or older who have filed their taxes and live in the province.

Payments will range from 175 dollars to those with highest incomes to 365 dollars for single parents and couples.

The province is delivering the payments through the Canada Revenue Agency and no one needs to apply.
