Prime Minister Mark Carney met with Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Tony Wakeham yesterday in Ottawa.

Carney called Wakeham’s agenda for the province ambitious, noting it is an exciting time for Newfoundland and Labrador and there is much to talk about.

Wakeham’s Progressive Conservatives won a slim majority in last month’s provincial election.

He told reporters yesterday he wants Ottawa to spend more on national defence in his province, and he feels Equinor’s proposed Bay du Nord oil project off the coast should be considered for fast-tracking.

The parliamentary secretary to the prime minister suggested an emissions requirement for the Bay du Nord oil project off Newfoundland may be no more.

The former Liberal government in Ottawa approved the project on the condition it reach net-zero emissions by 2025.

However, Liberal member of Parliament Kody Blois says Mark Carney is doing things differently.

Blois says Canada is still committed to climate targets, but he says provinces may have different ways of meeting them.
